Network, American Diabetes Association and Center for Disease Control. This 9-minute

American Academy of Television Arts & Sciences, Studio City, CA (1998 – present)
I continue to be a voting member of the American Academy of Television Arts and Sciences (Actors
Peer Group). Each year, after viewing over 100 DVD submissions, we determine the best performances
on television and hand out awards at the annual Emmy Awards Presentation, which is aired
internationally. The Emmy is nation’s highest award for television production.

Festival Teatro Peru-USA, Instituto Cultural Peruano Norte Americano (ICPNA), Lima,
Peru. (July 20-August 9)
Served as a judge for the ICPNA annual theatre festival competition, the largest and most prestigious
national theatre competition in Peru that drew playwrights, directors and actors from across country.
The three winners were announced at a national press conference and given cash awards as well as
full productions.
Artistic Associate and Company Member, El Teatro Campesino (ETC), San Juan Bautista, CA
(1978 – present)
I have worked with Founder/Artistic Director Luis Valdez and ETC since 1978 and have been Valdez’s
lead actress beginning with Zoot Suit (stage and film) and including Corridos (stage), Corridos: Tales
of Passion and Revolution (PBS-TV), I Don’t Have to Show You No Stinking Badges (stage), Ballad of
a Solider (film), and Mummified Deer (stage). As Artistic Associate I have worked with the artistic staff
in the following areas: advising on the selection of plays for the season; new play development;
organizing and leading post show discussions and academic discussion panels; serving as a liaison
with the theater departments at the University of California Santa Cruz and Stanford University to
develop co-productions, performances, and workshops; and organizing workshops, classes and
lectures with visiting professionals for the ETC Acting Ensemble. In December 2006 I organized a
meeting between former Peruvian President Alejandro Toledo, the first indigenous President in 500
years, and Luis Valdez to discuss the intersections of politics, theatre and indigeniety. In February
2007 I organized a 3-day residency with Luis Valdez at Pomona College.
New York University, Tisch School of the Arts, Hemispheric Institute Digital Video Library
Project (2006-present)
On-going collaboration with the Hemispheric Institute Digital Video Library Project at NYU, funded by
the Mellon Foundation. NYU Professor Diana Taylor heads the project which seeks to identify, gather,
digitize and catalogue the work of Latino theaters and performers across the Americas. This is the first
project of its kind and will serve to preserve the history of Latino performance in the Americas. I am
working with Professor Taylor and Luis Valdez to identify and catalogue never before seen archival
videos from El Teatro Campesino. Also with Professor Taylor, I am working with Cecilia Preciado
Burciaga, widow of renowned Chicano artist, writer and performer Antonio Burciaga. Antonio is one of Curriculum Vitae 13

the founding members of Culture Clash and his widow will be making his collection available to the

New York University, Tisch School of the Arts, Hemispheric Institute Digital Video Library
Project (2005)
Collaborated with the Hemispheric Institute Digital Video Library Project and its director, Professor
Diana Taylor, in gathering information on the Colombian theater company, Teatro Experimental de Cali
(TEC) and its founder Enrique Buenaventura. This company and Mr. Buenaventura’s and work
represent some of the most important in the history of contemporary Latin American Theater. I donated
over 100 hours of video interviews taped when I was conducting research on TEC and Mr.
Buenaventura (now deceased) in 1999. My archive has now been digitized and is available on the

Board of Directors, El Teatro Campesino (ETC), San Juan Bautista, CA(1997-present)
Working with Chairman Luis Valdez and a 12-member Board of Directors, our principle responsibilities
included fund-raising and audience development. Generated income is from grants, single ticket
sales, private donations, fundraising events, and merchandising. The 150-seat theatre is located 60
miles south of San Jose, CA in the rural farming community of San Juan Bautista, population 2,000.
We produce 3-4 plays a year including the annual Christmas Pageant, which has been continually
produced since 1971 and draws 3,000 people a year. Performed at the San Juan Bautista Mission,
this Christmas pageant is a Northern California theatrical tradition and a community collaboration with
a cast of 70 adults, children.
Board of Directors and Theater Consultant, National Latina Health Network (NLHN),
Washington, DC(1998-present)
As a member of the Board of Directors, I also serve as theater consultant for NLHN’s various health
outreach programs and contracts implementing theatre a grassroots community educational tool. The
Teatro AIDS Prevention Project (TAPP), funded by the Center for Disease Control focused on AIDS
prevention for Latina/o youth, one of the fastest growing infected populations in the country. I work
collaboratively with a team of health care professionals and NLHN staff in creating, writing, conducting
workshops and updating a handbook for grassroots community health organizations to help them
develop theater as a tool for distributing information on HIV/AIDS prevention. Work also entails
leading training workshops, giving informational presentations, conducting phone and on-site
consultations, and submitting field reports. In September 2007 the NLHN went to the Capitol for a
luncheon with Senators Ted Kennedy and Hilda Solis and presented to them and Congressional
members the first comprehensive National Latina Health Education policy document in the history of
the nation. The document was a compilation of the outreach and research compiled by NLHN from
grass roots Latina/o health centers across the country.
On-Site Evaluator, California Arts Council, Sacramento (CAC), CA (1998-present)
Conducted site visits of CAC funded theaters and acted as a liaison to facilitate compliance between
CAC and theatre organizations funded by CAC. Wrote and submitted reports to the CAC review
panel.
Theatre/Film Consultant, The Stanford University Libraries, Stanford University, CA (1996-
present)
As a graduate student I initiated collaboration with the Librarian for Special Collections Robert Trujillo
to identify for acquisition significant collections in the arts community. I assisted in the acquisition of
the archives of Efrain Gutierrez, recognized as the first Chicano feature film director/producer and
Alejandro Stuart, cultural ethnographer and photographer.
Trustee, National Theatre Conference (NTC) and Co-Chair, Barry Stavis New Play Award, New
York, NY (Second term 2006 – present)
NTC is national organization of 150 theatre professionals and scholars founded in 1932. As a Trustee
I assist in developing, planning and carrying out all NTC policy, governance, selection of committee
chairs, budgeting, selecting honorees for various awards including Person of the Year and Theatre of Curriculum Vitae 14

the Year, and planning the yearly conference. As co-chair of the Barry Stavis New Play Award
committee from 2001-2005, I was responsible for soliciting new plays from key theatres and festivals
across the country. After reading all submissions, committee members selected a playwright who
was invited to receive the award at the NTC Award Luncheon held each year at the Player’s Club in
NYC. First term 1997-2004.
Arts Consultant, Smithsonian Institution, American History Museum, Washington, D.C. (1999-
2001)
Consultant to “Encuentros” Executive Director Soledad Campos. Assisted in selecting and contacting
Latina/o artists and Latina/o themed artistic product for the “Encuentros” live performance series and
the “Encuentros en Cine” film festival.
Actor/Script Development, Rockefeller Foundation Grant, Borderlands Theatre, Tucson, AZ
(2001-2005)
Participated as the lead actor in workshops to develop the play Electricidad written by Macarthur
Award winner Luis Alfaro. The script was awarded the 2002 Kennedy Center New Play Fund Award
and premiered at Borderlands Theater in 2003. The play had its west coast premiere at the Mark
Taper Forum, Los Angeles in 2005.
Actor/Script Development, Bethlehem/ Steel Workers Union Hall, Maywood, CA (1985)
Participated as the lead actor in workshops to develop the play Lady Beth in collaboration with
unemployed workers of Bethlehem Steel Mill after the plant closure in 1984. The play, written and
directed by Susan Tanner, had several performances at the Steel Workers Union Hall. Musician Bruce
Springsteen funded the project.
Co-Founder/Community Arts Advocate, Art-In-The-Park, Highland Park, CA (1985-1987)
With Founder Robyn Salazar Valdez, established a community art center to serve the need for after
school programs for at risk youth. Lobbied Los Angeles city government for initial funding. The center
continues to be a vital and vibrant part of this community and was recently renamed the Lalo Guerrero
School of Music.

As the former international on-camera spokes person for the relief organization the Christian
Children’s Fund, I traveled to some of the most critical poverty areas in the world, i.e. Kenya (Masai
community), Thailand, Sri Lanka, India, Philippines, and to Ethiopia during the 1980’s famine crisis.

Producer, Symposium, Stanford University, Palo Alto, CA (April 6, 1997)
Created and produced the symposium “Acts of Protest and Affirmation: The Indigenous Roots of
Chicano and Latin American Teatristas”. I organized this 5-day event to increase the programming of
Latino Theater in the Drama Department and to bring an awareness of diverse theater communities.
Collaborating with a group of 15 student volunteers, I raised funds to bring in US Chicano theatre
practitioners and Grupo Los Mascarones from Mexico City, organized a public symposium, set-up
exhibits, organized workshops and lectures, and produced for university broadcast, Los Mascarones’
production of Emiliano Zapata, which aired on Stanford Instructional Television Network.

Wrote, produced, directed, and co-edited three one- hour programs, “Chicano Theater in America”
Oversaw a production crew of 5 people. The program looked at the origins of Teatro Chicano and its
relationship to Latin American Popular/political Theater in the latter years of the movement. First aired

Founded this organization to increase the diffusion, knowledge, and production of Latino arts and
culture at Stanford and the community at-large. The organization produced programming such as the
premiere screening of the PBS documentary Chicano! History of the Mexican American Civil Rights
Movement, the touring company of La Gran Carpa de los Rasquachis by Luis Valdez, and guest
speakers such as Arturo Rodriguez, President of the United Farm workers Union, among others.
